Will Your Car Pass the RTA Test? 5 Common Failure Points to Check First

It's that time of year again—your car registration is due, which means it's time for the mandatory RTA technical inspection. Failing the test can be a frustrating waste of time and money. To help you pass on your first attempt, we've compiled the 5 most common failure points we see at our garage.
1. Worn or Damaged Tires
This is a major safety issue and an instant failure. Inspectors check for sufficient tread depth (minimum 1.6mm), cracks in the sidewall, bulges, and any signs of damage. Also, ensure all four tires are the same size and type.
2. Faulty Lights
It's a simple check, but often overlooked. Before you go, test your headlights (high and low beams), brake lights, indicators, reverse lights, and hazard lights. A single burnt-out bulb will result in a fail.
3. Brake Performance
The inspection includes a computerized brake test (roller test) to check for braking efficiency and balance. If your brakes feel spongy, make a grinding noise, or the car pulls to one side when braking, get them checked beforehand.
4. Engine and Chassis Leaks
Inspectors will look under your car for any active fluid leaks, whether it's engine oil, coolant, or transmission fluid. Any significant leak is an automatic fail.
5. Suspension and Steering Issues
They will check for worn-out suspension components like ball joints and bushings. If you hear clunking noises over bumps or the steering feels loose, these are signs that your suspension needs attention.
